About

ARNNL Education and Research Trust is a registered charitable foundation, established in 1986, to promote, support and assist basic nursing education, continuing nursing education and nursing research.  Since its inception, the Trust has operated at arm's length from ARNNL with a separate volunteer Board of Directors, elected by the members of the Trust. The Board is responsible for the direction and administration of the Trust. Recipients of scholarships and bursaries are selected by  member volunteers on the Awards Committees.

At the ARNNL Annual Meeting in 2006, members voted to accept a motion that all members of ARNNL with a practicing license would become members of the Trust and that their $10 Trust membership fee would be collected at the time of licensure renewal. This provided secure funding for the Trust and enabled us to continue the important work of supporting nursing education in Newfoundland and Labrador.

In 1986 the Trust distributed $5000 in scholarships. Thanks to the $10 membership fee collected at licensure, the Trust was able to award more than $62,000 in 2015-16.

In October 2015, ARNNL Council approved a motion to move funds from an ARNNL internally-restricted "Scholarship and Bursaries Endowment Fund" to an internally-restricted "Building Contingency" fund. A key principle noted by Council was to ensure that the ARNNL Scholarship Fund Decision does not jeopardize the financial stability of the Trust.

Objectives of the Trust

The goal of the Trust is to:

  • provide scholarships to individuals enrolled in basic nursing programs,
  • provide scholarships and bursaries to nurses enrolled in continuing education programs, and
  • to provide awards to nurses conducting nursing research.
