ARNNL Undertaking an Evaluation of the Nurse Practitioner Role in Newfoundland and Labrador

March 21, 2017

The Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (ARNNL) is undertaking a comprehensive evaluation of the role of the Nurse Practitioner (NP) in Newfoundland and Labrador. A consultant, The Institute for the Advancement of Public Policy, Inc (Consultant), is carrying out the evaluation on behalf of ARNNL. The team members are Colleen Hanrahan, Christine Way, and Kathy Watkins.

The primary focus of the project is on the status of NP role implementation and utilization within the health care and community system and its impact at provider/professional, organizational and system levels. The evaluation will focus on eliciting information to document and inform the following:

  • characteristics of NP practice within practice settings;
  • implementation process used in public and private organizations to create and develop new NP roles;
  • factors influencing the integration of NP roles within practice settings of both public and private organizations;
  • impact of NP role on the health care system; and
  • future directions for the NP role.

The project is funded in part by the Department of Health and Community Services (DHCS), and is proceeding with the assistance of the Nurse Practitioner Evaluation Advisory Committee. The results of the evaluation will provide ARNNL and DHCS with an evidence base that will inform future implementation efforts and optimal utilization of NPs in NL.

ARNNL members may be contacted to participate in surveys, focus groups or key informant interviews as part of the evaluation. If you are contacted, please consider participating. Your participation would be voluntary and any information you provide would be confidential.

If you have any questions about the conduct of the evaluation, please contact Colleen Hanrahan at colleenhanrahan@bellaliant.net or Kathy Watkins at kwatkins@mun.ca.
